We decided on the area of synaesthesia because it was a topic we were all interested in. The video excerpt was selected because of its reliability and because it was informative and easy to understand. It was found on one of the world's largest video resources, YouTube, which has many other media resources relating to scientific findings and developments.

The video itself is from a large reputable media resource, The Discovery Channel. The excerpt also includes information from a qualified neuroscientist who is examining many questions about the brain. While much of Dr Eagleman's work is published in books rather than journals, he has still created the first standardised synaesthesia test and is heavily involved with the American Synesthesia Association.

When we did a search for synaesthesia videos, we found that comparable media items were small in number and mainly presented only examples of synaesthesia with little or no examination of the disorder.

The combination of all these factors led to the decision to use this media item.
